First Post

I decided to begin this blog because, come September, I will begin the long trek through graduate school. I would like this blog to be not only a record of that time but, eventually, a sound board for the ideas that will eventually comprise my dissertation.

As of now I am in the position of choosing between the Comparative Literature PhD programs at UC Irvine and Univ. of Colorado at Boulder. The campus visit to Irvine was amazing and the Boulder visit is coming up on the 28th to 30th of this month.

Now, in terms of ranking, funding and the resources available, Irvine is the rational choice. But I’ve lived in Southern California my whole life and the idea of having the chance to get out, especially to a beautiful place like Boulder, is unbelievably enticing. Not to mention that my best friend and philosophical cohort will also be at Boulder. All in all, I’ve got some difficult decisions to make…..

About A Geology of Borders

My name is James Goebel and soon I will be a graduate student in the Comparative Literature department at UC Irvine. My interests lie mainly in animal and environmental studies, Indigenous histories and European philosophy (though I am known to wander elsewhere).
